About City of Mesquite
Located on the east side of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, Mesquite has great freeway access as it is served by five major highways. Founded in 1887 as a railroad town, Mesquite grew from a booming agricultural economy into a modern suburban community encompassing 46 square-miles with a population of over 140,000. The City of Mesquite has a Council/Manager form of government in which the mayor and six council members are elected to two-year staggering terms of office. The city staff of 1,100 with an annual budget of $100 million delivers essential services to the citizens of Mesquite.
Mesquite Metro Airport is not only a vital part of the City of Mesquite, but is also a reliever hub that many are proud to support here in our community. Mesquite Metro Airport is an economic engine for us and surrounding communities, responsible for $8.3 million in total economic output, 116 jobs and $3.2 million in payroll.
The airport provides several community based services and programs to enhance the health, safety, and quality of life to area citizens and adjacent communities including police and fire support, medical flights, pipeline patrols, and Civil Air Patrol search & rescue and... wildfire patrols.
Future growth and development of the airport helps revitalize our community and bring revenue and business to our area on a daily basis which helps keep property taxes down. The City’s vision for the airport and the entire community is focused on building value not only in property, but also in the quality of life to all our citizens.
In 2005, Mesquite Metro was named the “Reliever Airport of the Year” by the Texas Department of Transportation and in 2014 the Air Traffic Controller Tower was commissioned.
The airport has been a major contribution to Mesquite being recognized as a major retail hub in northeast Texas. With over 4 million square feet of retail space, three restaurant rows, 30 movie screens, and the world renowned Mesquite Championship Rodeo, Mesquite has a reputation as a retail, dining and entertainment destination.
