The Contra Costa Public Works Department has an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in an Airport Safety Officer I position. Currently, the Department has one vacancy which may be assigned to either Buchanan Airport in Concord or Byron Airport in East County.
Airport Safety Officer I is the entry-level classification in the Airport Safety Officer Series. Incumbents render necessary assistance and services to airport users, inspect, repair, and maintain airport facilities and equipment, communicate with pilots, air traffic controllers and fixed base operators. Additionally, with training, these positions may respond to aircraft and airport emergencies. Airport Safety Officers are expected to be available to work any shift assignment as needed.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record demonstrating the following: Working knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations. Terminology used in the operation and maintenance of certified FAA airports. Terminology, procedures and protocols associated with security of both commercial and general aviation airports. A desire to work collaboratively with pilots, air traffic controllers, county departments and office staff. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Innovative with strong practical problem-solving skills. Organized and detail oriented; can prioritize and multitask simultaneous projects.
License Required: Possession of valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process
Education: Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate
Experience: Six months of full time experience working at a military or commercial service airport, or, one year full time experience working at an aviation business that provides services such as aircraft fueling/maintenance, aircraft charger, or flight training. NOTE: Retail, restaurant, or hospitality experience in an airport, or other aviation environment is not qualifying.
Substitution for Experience: Completion of one year airport internship; or, 30 semester units, or 45 quarter units (or its equivalent) of college-level course work; eight units of which must have included airport or aviation administration (or closely related field) courses; or, a combination of an airport internship and college-level coursework as described above.
Working Conditions: This airport position is full-time, 40 hours per-week, which includes weekend and holiday coverage. Employee may be required to work overtime and shift work. Emergency situations may require working outside of normally scheduled hours.
Conviction History: After receiving a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude your from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources Department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment
Disaster Service Worker: All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
Additional Salary Information: Airport Safety Officer I's may flexibly promote, after demonstrated proficiency and meeting the required years of experience, special physical requirements, training and certifications to Airport Safety Officer II ($4,538-$5,516/month)
