This position’s pay range is hourly on an 11 step pay scale. Also, will be eligible for merit and COLA pay increases, based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

An Aircraft Mechanic at Bangor International Airport (KBGR) is responsible for inspection, repair and maintenance of general aviation and commercial aircraft. This is a full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package. Possession of an Airframe and Powerplant FAA license is required. A successful candidate for this position will need to pass an airport background check and be able to obtain the appropriate security access to fulfill their job duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This list is meant to be an overview and should not be considered all-inclusive.
Conducts all major and minor overhaul and repair of general aviation and commercial aircraft, including airframe and engine repairs; makes necessary diagnostic tests, orders or makes necessary parts, as needed.
Conducts inspections of general aviation and commercial aircraft, as required, trouble-shooting problems and assuring compliance with FAA safety rules and regulations, and airworthiness directives.
Evaluates serviceability status of aircraft by weighing aircraft, performing engine runs, conducting pre-departure and static checks, and calibrating magnetic compasses.
Inspects and maintains aircraft engines and hydraulic systems, performing operational checks and rebuilding or replacing as necessary.
Makes service calls, tests aircraft and related systems, performs emergency field repair to aircraft and/or taxis or tows aircraft to hanger for repair.
Maintains and builds repair and test equipment and parts by welding, cutting and painting as needed.
Evaluates systems and makes wiring repairs and replacements, as required.
Services aircraft oxygen system and removes snow and de-ices aircraft as necessary.
Maintains a record for FAA of all aircraft repairs and/or noted problems, makes proper entries in aircraft log books and releases aircraft for service.
Periodically performs general and cleaning of repair equipment, tools and work area.
Occasionally repairs aircraft components for possible future resale.
Maintains inventory of supplies, parts and tools; orders or submits requisitions as needed.
Performs related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to professionally and effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, other City departments, and general public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Extensive knowledge of the accepted principles and practices involved in airframe and aircraft engine repair and maintenance, and through familiarity with diagnostic, overhaul and repair procedures and tools.
Thorough knowledge of hydraulic system functions and repair procedures. Knowledge of airworthiness directives, FAA rules and regulations, including knowledge applicable safety precautions and procedures when effecting and engine repairs.
Knowledge of and ability to interpret a variety of manufacture manuals, service bulletins and letters, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
Ability to fabricate parts from sheet metal and safely use welding and torch equipment, and ability to innovate and custom make repair parts and equipment.
Ability to investigate mechanical problems and repair a variety of large and small aircraft.
Ability to diagnose electrical failures and perform wiring repairs and replacements.
Ability to effectively utilize a wide variety of diagnostic equipment, including gauges and testers.
Ability to drive and operate a variety of airport vehicles and equipment, including aircraft radios.
Ability to provide hand tools.
Ability to respond to aircraft emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent frequently lifts aircraft components and equipment of moderate to heavy weight, and often works in awkward and/or cramped conditions, performing many functions in a prone, stooping or crouched position. Prolonged, intense physical strain is not associated with operations.
Incumbent performs majority of duties in a hangar environment, and is frequently exposed to excessive noise, grease, dirt, paint, thinners, acids, high pressure oxygen and nitrogen, and fuel fumes. Safety precautions must be observed at all times to ensure personal safety and the safety of others, Incumbent performs some aircraft repairs out-of doors in varying weather conditions.
