The Assistant Airport Director provides operational leadership and administrative support for airport functions, ensuring effective implementation of the Airport Director’s strategic direction while supporting organizational planning and decision-making. This position is responsible for coordinating daily operations, supervising staff, supporting regulatory compliance, and advancing departmental initiatives to maintain safe, efficient, and customer-focused airport operations. Oversees and coordinates the work of the Airport Operations Manager, Maintenance Manager, and administrative functions to ensure alignment with departmental goals and priorities.
Annual Salary: $97,525 - $146,287
Typical Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm
Required Education, Experience, and Licenses:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a major in Business Administration, Public Administration, Airport Administration or related field. One year of experience may be substituted for one year of education.
Three (3) years progressively responsible experience in airport operations, management, or a related field, including supervisory responsibilities.
Valid North Dakota Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain one within 180 days of employment; insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy.
Through in-house training or through training arranged by the City of Williston, must be able to become certified in the following areas:
Airport snow removal operations – within 90 days of employment
NWS Certified Weather Observer – within 180 days of employment
Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Certification – within 180 days of employment
Preferred Experience, Skills, and Qualifications:
Four (4) years of supervisory/management experience at a Part 139 commercial non-hub or larger airport preferred
Two (2) years of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) experience preferred
Two (2) years of airport snow removal experience preferred
AAAE Certified Member (C.M.) preferred
Private Pilot Certification preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern executive and administrative planning, management and control.
Knowledge of local, state and federal laws, regulations and policies applicable to the structure, functions, programs and practices affecting airport operations.
Skill in planning, developing and implementing policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in documentation, compliance tracking, reporting, and operational oversight.
Strong proficiency in computer systems and software applications, including data management, reporting tools, and standard office platforms; ability to quickly learn and adapt to specialized airport and operational systems.
Skill in effectively supervising, leading and delegating tasks and authority.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, board commissioners, local, state and federal officials, local media, private organizations and the public.
Demonstration of general maintenance responsibilities.
Demonstration of general ARFF responsibilities.
Ability to operate heavy equipment and machinery.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal codes, local ordinances, and departmental rules and regulations.
Knowledge of budgeting principles and practices.
Knowledge of personnel management principles.
Skill in management and supervision under both routine and emergency situations.
Skill in decision making and problem solving under routine and emergency conditions.
Skill in developing and implementing long-term operations plans.
